About the Artisan

Mamoru Nomura (Representative of Saga Raden Nomura)
Born in Kyoto in 1958, Mamoru Nomura joined his family business at age 20. After honing lacquer techniques at the local industrial research institute, he became one of the rare artisans capable of personally executing every step of production, from initial coating to final decoration (raden mother-of-pearl and makie gold-dust painting). Certified as a Traditional Craftsman in 2001, he was honored as a Kyoto "Master of the Future" in 2017. In 2018, his Natsume tea caddy with a spinning-top motif won the prestigious Association President's Award at the National Traditional Craftsmen Exhibition.

In 2015, Nomura launched his signature brand, "MAMORI" (a play on his name and the Japanese word for charm/talisman), driven by the desire to create authentic masterpieces designed to be passed down through generations as cherished family heirlooms.
