Product Description
Experience the true sophistication of Kyoto lacquer craftsmanship with Saga Raden Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Chopsticks - Shippo Pattern, masterfully created by renowned artisan Mamoru Nomura.
Crafted from slender, high-grade Striped Ebony, this pair features the classic tensoge design (an elegantly angled tip at the top) paired with an exquisite raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay depicting the traditional shippo (seven treasures) pattern. The shippo pattern—overlapping circles symbolizing harmony, endless good fortune, and connection—radiates a understated yet brilliant luster. Though refined and minimalist in form, the exceptional quality of the materials and handiwork makes a distinct statement, seamlessly elevating any meal or table setting.
About the Artisan
Mamoru Nomura (Representative of Saga Raden Nomura)
Born in Kyoto in 1958, Mamoru Nomura joined his family business at age 20. After honing lacquer techniques at the local industrial research institute, he became one of the rare artisans capable of personally executing every step of production, from initial coating to final decoration (raden mother-of-pearl and makie gold-dust painting). Certified as a Traditional Craftsman in 2001, he was honored as a Kyoto "Master of the Future" in 2017. In 2018, his Natsume tea caddy with a spinning-top motif won the prestigious Association President's Award at the National Traditional Craftsmen Exhibition.
In 2015, Nomura launched his signature brand, "MAMORI" (a play on his name and the Japanese word for charm/talisman), driven by the desire to create authentic masterpieces designed to be passed down through generations as cherished family heirlooms.
Material
Striped Ebony (Shimakokutan)
Celebrated for its beautiful contrast of rich black and dark brown wood grains, Striped Ebony is a classic choice for premium Japanese chopsticks. Exceptionally dense, durable, and naturally resistant to wear, it polishes to a unique, satin-like luster over time. Because of its hardness, it allows for finely tapered precision tips, making it an ideal choice for everyday dining. While once considered a classic entry point into luxury hardwood chopsticks, high-grade Striped Ebony has become increasingly rare and sought-after.
