Rantai Extra-Fine Bamboo Woven Lacquered Chopsticks

Ginza Natsuno

These beautiful chopsticks are crafted by weaving bamboo and layering lacquer, then polishing the surface to reveal intricate patterns. The feel is pleasantly unique—somewhere between lightweight bamboo chopsticks and traditional lacquered ones—making them subtly addictive to use.

About the Craft: Rantai Shikki (Bamboo Woven Lacquerware)
Rantai Shikki is a traditional Japanese craft in which thin strips of bamboo are woven into a base and coated repeatedly with lacquer to create a refined finish. This technique combines the supple strength of bamboo with the elegant luster of lacquer, resulting in pieces that are both lightweight and highly durable.

The method originated in ancient China and has a long history in Japan, with records of its production dating back to the Nara period (8th century).

When applied to chopsticks, this technique offers a perfect balance of the bamboo’s airy texture and the lacquer’s smooth touch, making them ideal not only for daily use but also as a thoughtful gift. Every time you hold them, you’ll feel the warmth of natural materials and the depth of traditional craftsmanship.
