Aizu Lacquerware Chopsticks - Rust Matte Finish (Engravable)
These chopsticks are crafted using Aizu lacquerware, a traditional craft from the Aizu region in Fukushima Prefecture. With a history that spans centuries, Aizu lacquerware incorporates a wide range of techniques, from classic designs like mother-of-pearl inlay and maki-e (gold lacquer) to unique finishes such as kanamushikui-nuri (gold worm-eaten lacquer) and tetsusabi-nuri (iron rust lacquer).
The rust matte finish is achieved by simplifying certain steps in the lacquer layering process, resulting in a distinctively subdued, matte texture. This pair of chopsticks exudes a unique, understated elegance, making it a captivating addition to any table setting.
About Aizu Lacquerware
Aizu lacquerware dates back to the Muromachi period when the planting of lacquer trees was first encouraged. By the mid-Edo period, Aizu lacquerware was approved for export overseas by the Tokugawa Shogunate. The craft is renowned for its Aizu-e designs featuring stylized motifs of pine, bamboo, and plum, as well as for its intricate carved lacquer (tsuishu) chopsticks and the distinctive speckled pattern of kanamushi-nuri.
