Place of Origin

Fushimi dolls (Kyoto Prefecture)

Fushimi dolls, considered the origin of earthen dolls, have a history of around 400 years. It is believed that the tradition began with the production and sale of these dolls as souvenirs for pilgrims visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine.

Referred to as the roots of earthen dolls, Fushimi once had around 60 kilns in operation by the late Edo period. However, today, only one remains: the Danka workshop. Founded around the 1750s, during the Kan'en era, the Fushimi Doll Workshop Danka continues this traditional craft.

Now in its eighth generation, the workshop produces dolls from about 2,000 molds passed down through the generations. These dolls have a unique charm and retain the same atmosphere that has made them popular since the Edo period.
