About the Origin - Wakasa Lacquerware
Located in Obama City, Wakasa is a major production hub responsible for nearly 90% of Japan's chopsticks. Wakasa lacquerware originated in the early Edo period when craftsmen of the Obama domain began depicting underwater scenes as motifs. Using materials such as eggshells, mother-of-pearl, pine needles, and rapeseed, they created chopsticks with a mystical and captivating appearance.
The process involves layering colored lacquer and gold leaf, followed by additional coats of lacquer, resulting in a durable finish. The finely tapered tips, known as "crane's beak," allow for precise handling of even the smallest items and symbolize longevity. These chopsticks combine beauty, durability, and functionality, making them a reliable choice for daily use.
