Echizen Lacquerware Chopsticks - Maki-e Nandina Motif
Nandina has long been cherished by people as an auspicious tree, with the phrase 'turn misfortune into fortune' (nan wo tenjite fuku to nasu) associated with it, as the words 'nan' (difficulty) and 'ten' (to turn) resemble 'nanten' (nandina). Each leaf and berry is meticulously depicted in the makie design.
Origin - Echizen Lacquerware
Echizen lacquerware, with a history dating back to the 6th century, is known for its rich tradition and exceptional craftsmanship. One of its characteristic techniques is hana-nuri (flower lacquer), in which lacquer is applied over brush marks and dried to prevent dust from sticking, creating a smooth finish. The result is chopsticks with a delightful texture that fully showcase the qualities of lacquer. Additionally, the gold leaf applied to the surface becomes more beautiful with time, making these chopsticks a joy to use and admire.
